Appearance
Fae are divided into four groups, determined by their elemental influence. Fae of the same elemental influence tend to share certain characteristics and body-types. All of the faerie folk are roughly the same size as humans, though their features seem somehow sharper, and more vivid. They will always appear somewhat more than humans, to a careful onlooker. All fae are rather mischievous, although their demeanor may vary. Generally, fae-folk live roughly five times as long as humans and therianthropes, reaching maturity at around forty years old.
Air fae tend to be very slight of build, almost frail looking. Most are toward the taller end of the spectrum, standing near six foot or a little over. Hair color usually runs from white-blonde to dirty blonde, with light blue or gray eyes. Skin color is usually very pale. Air fae tend to be very aloof and somewhat condescending. Their pranks usually display their superiority, without revealing themselves.
Water fae are generally more average of build, the women being more curvy and the men possessing wiry muscle. Hair color is usually a shade of brown, anywhere from light to nearing black, and eye color blue or bluish green. They tend to be pale to lightly tanned. Water fae are, by far, the most playful of the fae. They love to play and tease.
Fire fae have stronger, more athletic builds, with bronze-tanned skin. Their hair color runs from auburn to red, while their eyes are usually bright green or hazel. Fire fae usually have quick, fiery tempers and their pranks are often a form of revenge on those that have slighted them in some way. Their pranks can be the most vicious.
Earth fae are stockier and more solidly built than their brethren, tending more to the shorter spectrum, standing between five and a little over five and a half feet tall. They have dark skin, usually light to dark brown. They have dark hair, usually dark brown or black, and brown or dark green eyes. Earth fae are the most practical of the fae-folk and they are usually careful to keep from harming anything with their pranks.
Combat
Faerie folk tend to avoid physical confrontations, air fae especially. They much prefer to talk their way out of confrontations, or utilize trickery. While they are reluctant to use their elemental command to a grand scale in the open, revealing their nature, they will find subtle ways to tweak things to their advantage. On rare occasions, fae of differing elements can work together to manipulate elements not solely their own. For example, air and water fae cooperating to control ice, or fire and earth fae manipulating lava.
Habitat/Society
Fae-folk are very solitary, in regards to their own race, and nomadic. Often, they can and will live within groups of humans, hiding their nature, or therianthropes, more openly. Their nomadic tendencies tend to keep them moving around and keeps humans from questioning their nature and slow aging. Once every fifty years or so, the fae of an area gather together on the first new moon of the year. Such meetings are used to commune with Styra, record fae births and deaths, and ensure interaction among the fae. Fae folk are neither patriarchal or matriarchal. The oldest fae in a gathering generally holds the highest status.
Fae often form relationships with humans and therians, sometimes without letting their partner know of their true nature. As with the other races, such unions cannot produce children. To ensure the continuation of the fae race, the first time that a mature fae encounters an unrelated fae of the opposite sex, the pair are almost compelled to reproduce. From that point on, the fae can choose whether or not they wish to remain with another fae long enough to pursue a relationship or reproduce.
Fae-folk are always fertile and have a nine month gestational period, although births tend to be easier on fae females than their human counterparts. A fae's element is determined by their parentage. Female offspring take on their mother's element, and males take on their father's element.
Ecology
Fae-folk can survive in any environment, although they tend to prefer an environment suited to their element. For example, a water fae would be uncomfortable in a desert, as an air fae would be uncomfortable in a cavern.
